Top Ten Tuesday: Unique Story Formats

written by Leslie April 11, 2017

Happy Tuesday! And that means another edition of TOP TEN TUESDAY brought to you by The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s theme is Unique Books. Since I’m a writer, I’m adjusting mine a little bit to focus on the creation of the story. I’m always interested in finding different ways to tell a story. So I bring you…

Top Ten Unique Book Formats

10. S (Doug Dorst)

I actually haven’t read this book yet. Lol. But the story is a love story told through the novel and the footnotes and then annotations in the book tie it all together. Sounds intriguing.

9. Finnegan’s Wake (James Joyce)

When you figure it out, call me.

8. Life After Life (Kate Atkinson)

Ursula dies and is born on the same day and the story moves in different directions the whole way. Awesome.

7. Winesburg, Ohio (Sherwood Anderson)

This is one of my favorite classics. It’s a series of interrelated stories. Not a new format, necessarily, but I love to see an early version of the format.

6. When It Happens (Susane Colasanti)

Multiple point of views. Again, it’s not a new format but this was, I believe, the first book I read with dual points of view. I loved it.

5. Out of the Dust (Karen Hesse)

This is another one that isn’t the first of its kind- novel in verse. But it’s the first novel in verse I read. I liked it so much I cried. 🙂

4. Before I Fall (Lauren Oliver)

I’ve already documented my enjoyment of this book. So I won’t say more than repeating the same day over and over did not make for a boring book.

3. What She Saw… (Lucinda Rosenfeld)

An interesting single 20-somthing story because it’s told through all the loser guys she dated. A portrait of each one. Anyone who’s been single for any amount of time will find it humorous I’m sure.

2. The Eyre Affair (Jasper FForde)

This whole series and concept is one of the most creative ideas I’ve seen. Book lovers will fall all over themselves over this. And if you like mysteries, you might explode.

1. Sliding Doors

Hahaha. I know this isn’t a book. But in terms of story, this is super creative. Take that one moment in life and see the two paths your life could take if you make a train or miss a train. This is pre-Goop Gwyneth Paltrow. I didn’t hate her yet.

Tell me more unique stories I should read! What kinds of story format do you like to read? Do share 🙂
