Music Match-Up #5

written by Leslie April 20, 2017

Music Match-Up is here again! This is a weekly(ish) celebration of books and music. I take a book and pair it with a song that either reminds me of the book, has a similar feel to it, or maybe just has a random connection that only makes sense to me. I’m cheating this week–just a little–because this author already stated that this song inspired her story. But even if I didn’t already know that, I’d still match them up!

Tobacco Sun // “Poison & Wine”

Tobacco Sun by Lorna Hollifield is set to release in June. I was able to read an ARC of this southern fiction tale. At its most basic level, it’s the story of a small town murder and the journey to discover a motive. But, at its heart, it’s the story of two sisters and how their lives have intersected throughout the years and caused all sorts of knots and tangles. These sisters, Sydra and jimi-Lynn, really do have a love-hate relationship and are so intertwined, it’s hard to see that they could ever truly go their separate ways (Disclaimer…I haven’t finished the book yet!!!)

This song has a beautiful heaviness to it just as the sisters’ relationship does. You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don’t want me to. And I think this idea of being both poison and wine to someone also applies to the minor characters as well. Oh your hands can heal, your hands can bruise, I don’t have a choice but I’d still choose you. That line in particular reminds me of the character Vanse (the boy-next-door type that I’m personally rooting for at this point in the story!) and his relationship with both sisters. I can definitely see how this song inspired a story with such complicated relationships.
