More Sonnets on Love (Pretty Cool Poetry #13)

written by Leslie February 22, 2018

Another #TBT and another look back at some love sonnets I’ve written. Lest you think last week’s poems were the end of my melancholy college years, there’s more! The first poem shows some enlightenment, though. At some point, I was able to appreciate that saying “Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” Amazing that I could get there in my college years! The second poem lightens the mood and flashes forward to the adulting years and the post-college-online-dating-apocolypse, as I refer to it. I think online dating is the worst thing to happen to love ever. I was forced to try it because people have stopped socializing, and the horror seemed to have no end. The details in this sonnet are all real-life words used in the profiles of my “matches” and a nod to the reason you must give for ending your account. I had to laugh otherwise I’d still be crying. Lol.

A Beautiful Sadness

Golden fields of daffodils, how you’re free
To grow wild with no man to give you life.
Rays of sunlight upon your face fall gently,
While heat waves burn my eyes with painful strife.
How you freely gaze upon the vast sky
To see your smile mirrored in the clouds.
My looks, confined and bound, soar not so high,
And my grins suffocate under this shroud.
The gentle summer breeze that makes you dance
Does whisper sweet concerns unto your ears,
While winter’s fierce, cold gust in my ear chants
But harsh indiff’rent words that spill my tears.
O lucky life that feels such heav’nly bliss
Soon dies without touch of a gentle kiss.

An E-Valentine’s Sonnet

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee at your potter’s wheel and with your
Eyes of denim blue, and collecting your
Erotica and many fountain pens.
I love thee full of genuineness and
So eclectic, smelling scents of women.
I love thee with your handshake that is a
Handshake, your word that is your word, and your
Strong, playful side, grabbing life by the horns.
I love thee in the early mornings, fresh
Dew on grass, birds singing over traffic.
I love thee with the many tears of this
Paid month!–and if I choose, I shall but love
Thee better after…”I’d rather not say.”
