First Kiss

written by Leslie October 3, 2013

I love a first kiss. Who doesn’t, right? Here is Mallory’s first kiss, from my (sadly) unpublished manuscript Lottery Girl.

We found a spot, and he pulled me close, wrapping his arms around me like a protective suit of armor. His heartbeat pounded against my chest as I leaned in closer, my lips inches from his warm neck. I closed my eyes and breathed in the dizzying aroma of that hint of cologne mixed with the clean smell of his hair. One of Adrian’s hands rested lightly on the small of my back while the other drifted up to touch the bare skin on my shoulder. My own pulse quickened as the warmth of his hand sent fizzy bubbles bursting throughout my body. We moved in rhythm while everything around us faded away.

MC900433068The song ended, and our bodies parted slightly. I tilted my head up, and a whisper of space was all that separated our lips. Everything inside of me froze in dreamy anticipation. But a blast of techno music sent a body crashing into Adrian, and the moment vanished. My heart sank as Adrian steadied himself. I reached out for his hand, desperate to reconnect with him, and he led me off the dance floor.

Instead of returning to the table, Adrian took me outside where the warm evening air greeted us. We walked slowly, stopping at a bench to look out at the lake.

“So, how are you enjoying your first last dance?” I nervously spit out, studying the tiny flower decorating one of my painted toenails.

He laughed. “Aw, they’re not so bad, I guess.”  He squeezed my right hand ever so slightly. “With the right person.”

All the heat in my body rushed to my cheeks.

His hands let go of mine, and he pulled me in closer. The touch of his strong hand on the bare skin of my upper back sent sizzling sparks off into the night. His head leaned down, inching toward mine for our very first kiss. Slowly his soft lips parted mine, kissing me gently at first. Then as his hand moved up to my neck, pulling me closer to him, his lips sought mine more urgently. My heart pounded against his as the warmth of his hands on my skin and the gentle passion of his soft lips ignited fireworks inside me.
