I’m going to tell you a secret. Are you ready?
In my next book which is on submission, there is a secondary character named Marigold. She goes by Mari. Mari is a friend–a very good friend– to my main character Emma. Have you heard of Marigold Companion Planting? Well, that’s Mari. Once in elementary school, Mari had to recite a poem from memory. She found this one that shared her same name. And I found it, too. And it added a whole other layer of meaning to my story and Mari’s place in it and swoony Ryan, who remembered the lines that Mari recited all the way back in elementary school. Enjoy! And I hope to bring you Emma, Mari, and Ryan’s story someday soon!
Marigolds by Robert Graves
With a fork drive Nature out,
She will ever yet return;
Hedge the flowerbed all about,
Pull or stab or cut or burn,
She will ever yet return.
Look: the constant marigold
Springs again from hidden roots.
Baffled gardener, you behold
New beginnings and new shoots
Spring again from hidden roots.
Pull or stab or cut or burn,
They will ever yet return.
Gardener, cursing at the weed,
Ere you curse it further, say:
Who but you planted the seed
In my fertile heart, one day?
Ere you curse me further, say!
New beginnings and new shoots
Spring again from hidden roots.
Pull or stab or cut or burn,
Love must ever yet return.
